New look – New Write up!

BIG Changes…

Well we’re getting closer to being able to tell you about our next festival screening and also about our September release but before we get down to those details we thought we would share with you our new look poster and hot off the press synopsis!

So what do you think?

Set in coalition Britain amidst the crisis of capitalism, the government launches their flagship deception of ‘The Big Society’ from Liverpool. Connor, a disillusioned 15-year old sits alone in his cell. He understands the lie: We’re not ‘all in this together’ like the man on the TV says. Bullied and taunted by the other young offenders, Connor’s only hope is Linda, his Social Worker, who he has come to trust. But what happens when Linda’s job is threatened, will she be able to find a way to care for him?

So who wants to see the film next month as part of the line up of a major arts and music festival? Find out more next week….

Some BIG fun in London!

On Monday we held our BIG screening, opening the London Labour Film Festival at the Odeon, Covent Garden, London and it couldn’t have gone better!

Unison Northwest Regional Manager Lynne Morris introduced the film with passion and commitment and explained how important it is that Trade Union’s invest in the arts and in creative responses like ours. There was then a screening of an extract from the recent Tony Benn Film. It was the perfect empowering short to be played ahead of our film and set the tone for our anti-austerity musical.

After our screening there was a Q&A with our Director Lynne Harwood, Leading Lady Paula Simms, Performer Joe Maddocks and Composer Andy Frizell, kindly chaired by Carl Roper, National Organiser for TUC.

Read a review of what Trade Unionist blogger Jon Bigger thought of the screening here

The screening was attended by Industry professionals, trade unionists, filmmakers and independent cinema owners and were excited to have forged a number of exciting partnerships off the back of the screening…. more will be announced in near future…

In the meantime if you want to see what this Big Society The Musical malarky is all about, some of the team will be presenting at Saturday’s News From Nowhere celebration of Working Class Resistance from 11am on Saturday 3rd May at the Britannia Adelphi Hotel Liverpool. More info here

Two Weeks To Go…

There’s just two weeks to go until our BIG screening, opening the London Labour Film Festival on 28th April at the Odeon, Covent Garden, London.

Produced exclusively on Merseyside by the team at award-winning not for profit filmmaking organisation First TakeBig Society The Musical is a provocative, creative and gutsy response to the government’s ‘Big Society’ policy.  The production was made possible by funding from Liverpool City Council, Unison Northwest, SHAP and the Co-operative Community Fund with backing from Creative England and Film London.  ‘Big Society The Musical’ is about standing up and saying “this is who we are – the real big society – and our actions speak louder than their words.”

The film tackles real issues and unpicks the reality of a society that is being systematically crushed and stripped of its spirit.  Decades of hard work are at risk of being wasted and lost.  It’s about saying we won’t just sit back and let our communities be destroyed and forgotten.  As one of the characters in the film sings: “If they don’t see us march, then we’ll dance.  If they don’t hear us shout, then we’ll sing.”  The London Labour film festival screening is our first stop on the film’s release and we’re excited about where this journey will take us!

We have had some great press coverage in the run up to the festival including Stronger UnionsMorning Star, next week we are recording an interview with BBC Radio Merseyside and we’re featured in today’s Liverpool Echo.  Check out the article here: http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/whats-on/arts-culture-news/big-society-musical-merseyside-film-6987570

The BIG Premiere

So 2014 is the year of BIG SOCIETY THE MUSICAL’s release and we begin our promotional tour with a bang.

Image

We are very proud to announce that Big Society The Musical has been invited to open this years London Labour Film Festival on 28th April at the Odeon in Covent Garden, London.

This is a huge coup for us as we have been chosen as the only British film and our world premiere screening will open the festival to all major press. The rest of the bill contains high quality European and American labour films check it our here: http://londonlabourfilmfest.com/films/

The London Labour Film Festival is a celebration of social commitment through cinema so is the perfect place to launch our community led film. The LLFF will host a series of film screenings, talks and special events offering varied, challenging and inspiring cinematic takes on the lives, hopes and struggle of workers. Spanning five days at the heart of the UK capital, and taking audiences on journeys from the very real effects of the financial crisis on the working classes to visions of future labour, the LLFF will welcome guests including Ken Loach and Mike Leigh for what will be a major contribution to a growing global movement committed to cinema’s treatment of labour.

The festival will promote Big Society The Musical across the Guardian Newspaper network who partner the film festival’s programme and the film will also potentially be taken internationally by the Global Labour Film Festival network. A great opportunity for this Merseyside film to be opened up to a world wide audience.

If any of you are in town on 28th April and can make it we would love to see you down there so book your tickets now!.

Further screenings across the country and in other festivals will be announced soon but in the meantime stay up tp date and follow us on Twitter @BigSocietyFilm and on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/bigsocietythemusical
